Signor Bettini was an Italian tenor. He toured the United States under Max Maretzek's management in Philadelphia, at the New York Opera House, and Castle Garden, in 1851. The tenor sang the roles of Sir Edgardo di Ravenswood, Otello, and Fernando. During the 1851-52 season, Bettini performed at the Astor Place Opera House in "La Favorita," "Lucia" and "Lucrezia Borgia." The singer, with several members of Maretzek's company, left their manager to join the Artists' Union Italian Opera Company and perform at Niblo's Garden. The move caused bitterness on both sides. Here Bettini poses, sporting a checkered vest, at the Elliott & Fry studio in London.
