Lionel Brough (1836-1909)
Lionel Brough was a well known English actor, comedian, and playwright. Curiously, he made his start with Lydia Thompson's British Blondes at New York's Wallack's Theatre in 1862. There his burlesque, "The Colleen Bawn," was staged. Brough finally made his London debut in 1868 at the newly created Queen's Theatre as Fagin in "Oliver Twist." He reappeared there in 1878 in "A Double Marriage" and "Dearer Than Life." At the turn of the century Brough was still active, performing in "Twelfth Night" as Sir Toby Belch in 1901 and as Eumaeus in "Ulysses" in 1902.
