Robert Browning (1812-1889)

Robert Browning was a leading English poet and the husband of a very famous poet, Elizabeth Barrett Browning. Robert Browning began writing as a teenager. William Charles Macready commissioned Browning to write a play, "Strafford," successfully staged in 1837. In 1845 the author met the great Elizabeth Barrett and they began a secret romance. Once married, they lived in Italy. Browning's best known poems are "My Last Duchess," "Pippa Passes," and "The Ring and the Book."
