Elihu Burritt (1810-1879)
Elihu Burritt was an American social reformer and linguist who was known as the "learned blacksmith." He edited the "Christian Citizen" and promoted the causes of antislavery, temperance, and self-education. He was especially interested in world peace, helped to found the League of Universal Brotherhood and personally organized world peace congresses. Burritt also promoted cheaper international postage in order to foster greater intellectual exchange among nations.
