Sir Richard F. Burton (1821-1890)
Richard Francis Burton was an explorer, linguist, translator, and a deviant Victorian. His talents and his defects were extraordinary. Conversant in Persian, Afghan, Hindustani and Arabic languages, he traveled to Medina and Mecca in disguise. Burton explored Africa, Ethiopia, the United States, and Brazil, writing vivid accounts of his experiences. His translations of the "Kama Sutra" and the "Arabian NIghts" were bestsellers.
