William Calcraft, "London Hangman" (1800-1879)

Calcraft was the public executioner in England from 1829 to 1874. He performed between 450 and 500 executions, including at least 35 women. Calcraft was famous for his "short drops" - which caused most of his clients to strangle to death. Entitled to keep the clothing and personal effects of the condemned, he sold them to Madame Tussaud for her waxworks and made a handsome profit.
