Grand Duchess Marie Alexandrovna, Duchess of Edinburgh (18531920)
Grand Duchess Marie Alexandrovna, daughter of Emperor Alexander II, married Alfred, duke of Edinburgh, in 1874. It was a controversial marriage as the Romanovs belonged to the Russian Orthodox church. Always conscious of her imperial superiority, Marie disliked her British relations, and after the birth of their five children, husband and wife drifted apart.
