James Lewis (1837-1896)

Actor James Lewis' real name was James Lewis Deming. In 1865 he played as low comedian at the Olympic Theatre in New York. Lewis moved into the field of burlesque, where he attracted the attention of the young Augustin Daly, who hired him from 1869 to 1875 and again in the 1880s. Lewis, known for his dryness as a comedian, excelled in his portrayal of cynical and worldly men. Holding an oversized hat, he poses in costume at the Mora studio in New York.
