Charles Mathews (1802-1878)

Born in England, Charles James Mathews was a fair actor, an excellent comedian, and a talented writer of comic sketches. The actor came to the U.S. in 1837. He married Lucy Eliza Bartolozzi (Madame Vestris), an important London actress (d.1856), then New York actress Lizzie Weston (Mrs. A. H. Davenport).
