John McCullough (1837-1885)
Born in Ireland, John Edward McCullough made his first theater appearance in 1857 at Philadelphia's Arch Street Theatre in "Belle's Stratagem." From 1866 to 68 he traveled with Edwin Forrest as his main supporting actor. McCullough became co-manager of the Bush Street Theatre in San Francisco. When Forrest died, McCullough was viewed as his successor, but unfortunately could not live up to the talent and originality of his mentor. In 1884 he broke down and soon died in a mental hospital. Here McCullough poses at the Howell studio, wearing a hairpiece.
