Harry S. Murdoch (1845-1876)
Actor Harry S. Murdoch (H. S. Hitchcock), was the nephew of the eminent tragedian, James E. Murdoch, his mother's brother. Young Murdoch died in the Brooklyn Theatre fire in New York, on December 5, 1876, when he was only thirty-one. Poet Henry O'Meara listed his famous roles: "Our Harry Murdoch, genial Art and giftful Nature's son. Now round his memory trooping come hosts of vanished friends - There poor 'Pierre' limps, slowly drooping - here bold 'Laertes' bends; Sad, hand in hand, 'Our Boys' return, but wit no more beguiles, 'Antony' sings no more, and 'Diedrich' brings but tearful smiles."
