A.V. Kauntz (1828-1895)
August Valentine Kauntz was major general of volunteers in the Union Army. Before the Civil War he was a cavalryman and fought Native Americans on the Pacific Coast. During the Civil War he was an infantry commander. Kauntz repeatedly raided enemy lines of communication but without any great successes. He was brevetted major general in 1864. Kauntz's troops were some of the first to take over the Confederate capital. Kauntz was one of the commissioners at the trial of the Lincoln conspirators.
