Laura Keene (c.1826-1873)
Laura Keene, an English actress, director, and producer, pioneered as a woman theater manager. Keene debuted in New York in 1852 in "The Will." In 1855 she opened the Metropolitan and christened it Laura Keene's Varieties Theater. Keene produced Tom Taylor's "Our American Cousin" in the U.S. and was performing in that play at Ford's Theater on the night of Lincoln's assassination.
