Joseph Warren Keifer (1836-1862)

Joseph Warren Keifer was a brevet major general of volunteers in the Union Army. He was commissioned as a major in April 1861. He was brevetted brigadier general of volunteers in 1864 and major general of volunteers for Petersburg-to-Appomatax in 1865. After the war Keifer was elected as a Republican to Congress (1877-85) and was speaker of the house for the 47th Congress. He returned to the army in the Spanish-American War. In this picture he is a colonel.
