John H. Kelly (1840-1864)
John Herbert Kelly was a brigadier general for the Confederate Army. He attended West Point, but did not graduate; he resigned on 29 December 1860, after South Carolina seceded. He was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant in the Confederate Army. In 1861 he was promoted to captain and assistant adjutant general for William J. Hardee. He led an Arkansas regiment at Shiloh, Perryville and Stone River, where he was wounded. Not yet twenty-four, he was appointed brigadier general in 1863. He was killed August 20, 1864, in Tennessee.
