James L. Kemper (1823-1895)
James Lawson Kemper was the speaker of the house in the Virginia House of Delegates and a Confederate general during the Civil War. Severely wounded at Gettysburg, Kemper was captured and his condition worsened. When he was exchanged it was feared he would not live, but he survived and was promoted to major general.
