Augustus H. Kilty (1807-1879)
Augustus Henry Kilty was a rear admiral in the U.S. Navy. On June 17,1862, Kilty was commander of the USS Mound City, which had been sent up the White River to assist in an attack at St. Charles, Arkansas. A blow from a camouflaged gun penetrated the Mound City and exploded the steam drum. Eighty men were scalded to death and forty-three drowned or were shot by sharpshooters as they tried to swim away. As a result of his injuries, Kilty lost his left hand.
