James L. Kiernan (1837-1869)
James Lawlor Kiernan was a physician and editor of a medical newspaper when he was commissioned as a surgeon in the Union Army in 1862. He was appointed brigadier general of volunteers in 1863. In Mississippi he was captured and subsequently escaped. After the war he was U.S. Consul in China.
