Judson Kilpatrick (1836-1881)

[Hugh] Judson Kilpatrick was a brevet major general in the Union Army. He was known as "Kill Cavalry" for his controversial daring and recklessness. On the third day of Gettysburg he ordered a foolish charge by one of his brigade commanders, who was killed. He is also remembered for the Kilpatrick - Dahlgren Raid on Richmond, in which Dahlgren was killed. He later edited Our Magazine, a literary monthly, and co-wrote with J. Owen Moore wrote a five-act play, Allatoona: An Historical and Military Drama (1875), about West Point cadets in the Civil War. The play was later revised as The Blue and the Gray. After the war he became minister to Chile, where he feuded with Stephen Hurlbut, U.S. minister to Peru.
