Jared P. Kirtland (1793-1877)
Jared Potter Kirtland was a physician and naturalist. During his practice as a physician he was sent to the Ohio state legislature for three terms (1828-34). In 1837 he began many years of teaching in medical schools. Throughout his life he made discoveries in natural history and published over 200 articles. He studied fish, insects, birds, bees, flowers, and fruit, and he established the Cleveland Museum of Natural History.
