Wladimir Kryzanowski (1824-1887)

Wladimir Kryzanowski ("Kriz") was a brigadier general of volunteers in the Union Army. He was a civil engineer who emigrated to the U.S. in 1846. He raised a Polish regiment that became part of the 58th New York. When he was appointed brigadier general in 1862 he was not confirmed by the Senate, supposedly because they could not pronounce his name. He was brevetted brigadier general of volunteers in 1865.
