Whitelaw Reid (1837-1912)
Reid was a U.S. journalist and diplomat. He first made his name as a war correspondent during the Civil War. He became the successor to Horace Greeley in 1872 as editor and publisher of the "New York Tribune," but relinquished the position in 1905 when he became ambassador to Great Britain.
