Augusta Walby, a dancer and performer, was a favorite of variety halls. She began her career in 1859 as a ballet dancer, frequently performing with her sister Louisa, at New York's Melodeon and the Volksgarten, a German theater. Throughout the 1860s, "Gus" or "Gussie" continued at the Melodeon and became popular at New York's Gaieties Saloon, still performing with Louisa Walby. All of the Walby Sisters, Augusta, Lizzie, and Louisa, were featured in 1863 at Barnum's Museum Theatre.
