Cassius Marcellus Clay (1810-1903)
Cassius M. Clay was an American antislavery leader. Clay was one of the founders of the Republican Party in 1854. He served as United States minister to Russia and helped negotiate the purchase of Alaska in 1867. Appointed a major general in the Union army, he refused to fight as long as slavery continued to be protected in Southern states. Pictured here at age 82.
