John Jordan Crittenden (1787-1863)

John Jordan Crittenden was an American statesman best known for the Crittenden Compromise, his unsuccessful attempt to resolve sectional differences on the eve of the American Civil War. Crittenden served intermittently in the U.S. Senate, from 1817 through 1861. He was also the governor of Kentucky and briefly the attorney general.
