Samuel Ryan Curtis (1805-1866)
Samuel Ryan Curtis graduated from West Point in 1831, fought in the Mexican War, was the city engineer of St. Louis, and a U.S. Congressman from Iowa. Curtis was colonel of the 2nd Iowa Volunteer Infantry at the beginning of the Civil War and was soon promoted to brigadier general, a position he resigned his congressional seat to accept. He commanded the Union army that defeated the Confederates at Pea Ridge and was named major general in recognition of this victory.
