Charlotte Saunders Cushman was one of the greatest dramatic actresses of the 19th century. She began as an opera singer, but made her acting debut in New Orleans as Lady Macbeth in 1836. She triumphed as Romeo in her 1837 New York debut. In 1845 Cushman took London by storm.
