James P. Brownlow (1842-1879)
James P. Brownlow was a Union soldier who served as Captain, Lieutenant Colonel, and Colonel of the 1st Tennessee Cavalry before being brevetted Brigadier General, U.S. Volunteers. He sent his men naked against the enemy, crossing the Chattahoochee River near Atlanta, Georgia on July 9, 1864. Here Brownlow wears his lieutenant colonel's uniform.
