Joseph Casey (1814-1879)
Joseph Casey was a lawyer and politician. He represented the state of Pennsylvania as a Whig in the United States Congress from 1849 to 1851. In 1861, President Abraham Lincoln appointed him to the United States Court of Claims and he became its chief justice in 1863. Under his leadership, this court was known as a fair tribunal for claims against the federal government during the Civil War.
