"The Death of Lincoln" by Alonzo Chappel

A fictional scene of twenty-three people attends Abraham Lincoln's death. In reality, only a few witnesses were in the small boardinghouse room at any one time. Mary Todd Lincoln kneels by the bed while Dr. Charles Augustus Leale takes the President's pulse. Also depicted are Robert Todd Lincoln, Vice President Andrew Johnson, Cabinet members such as Charles Sumner, Gideon Welles, and Edward Stanton, Union Army generals, Clara Harris, and Henry Rathbone, among others. Alonzo Chappel painted this scene, based on the design of John Batchelder, who collected the photos of those present.
