John Hunt Morgan (1825-1864)

Confederate brigadier general and raider. In 1862 he began the famous "Morgan's Raids." Captured in Ohio in 1863, he escaped from the Ohio State Penitentiary. On September 4, 1864, he was surprised and killed by Union troops. Morgan had served in the U.S. Army during the Mexican War. He is depicted here in a heavily retouched photograph, and an artistic combination of a Union and Confederate uniform.
