John Clifford Pemberton (1814-1881)

Confederate lieutenant general. Although Pemberton was born in Philadelphia, his wife was from Virginia and he joined the Confederate army while his brothers fought for the Union. He became known as the "Defender of Vicksburg," however he was forced to surrender to Grant there in July 1863.
