Margaret Chase Smith (1897-1995)
Margaret Chase Smith was a Republican senator from Maine who gave a speech in 1950, that she subsequently called her "Declaration of Conscience," criticizing Senator Joseph McCarthy for "character assassination sheltered by the shield of congressional immunity." She was the first woman to be elected to both houses of Congress.
