From left to right are D. W. Middleton (the clerk, standing), David Davis, 1862-77, Noah H. Swayne, 1862-81, Robert C. Grier, 1846-70, James M. Wayne, 1835-67, Samuel P. Chase (the chief justice), 1864-73, Samuel Nelson, 1845-72, Nathan Clifford, 1858-81, Samuel F. Miller, 1862-1890, and Stephen J. Field, 1863-93. Of these, five (Davies, Swayne, Chase, Miller, and Field) were appointed by Lincoln.
