"The Main Question"
This political cartoon satirizes the rising tensions over the boundary dispute between the United States and Canada which became the Aroostook War. It was prompted by a fight over the rich timber territory at the Maine-New Brunswick border. Martin Van Buren is on an ox with the head of Maine Governor John Fairfield confronting Queen Victoria riding the Duke of Wellington as a dog. Congressman Henry A. Wise tries to pull the ox by the tail to get it away from the dispute.
