Stand Watie (Degadoga) (1806-1871)

Stand Watie or Degadoga (which means He Stands on Two Feet) was the principal chief of the Southern Cherokee Nations. The Confederate Army made him a brigadier general, in command of the Indian Cavalry Brigade. Watie was the last Confederate general to surrender at the end of the Civil War. Union generals respected him as a brilliant military strategist.
