Empress Carlotta (1840-1927) and Emperor Maximilian (1832-1867)
In 1864 Austrian archduke Ferdinand Maximilian was persuaded by France's Napoleon III to become Emperor of Mexico, unaware he would be Napoleon's puppet ruler. The Austrian's wife, Princess Marie Charlotte Amelie of Belgium, who married him in 1857, became Empress Carlotta. When France withdrew its military support, the puppet empire collapsed and Maximilian was executed by his rival, Benito Juarez.
