Gertrude Ederle (1905-2003), Champion Swimmer
Gertrude Ederle, the first woman to swim the English Channel, broke the record held by a male swimmer by nearly two hours, finishing in 14 hours and 32 minutes. Showered with ticker tape, she makes a triumphant return to New York, her hometown, after her 1926 swim. No stranger to glory, Ederle won one gold and two bronze medals at the 1924 Olympics.
