Mahalia Jackson (1911-1972)

The world-renowned singer of African American gospel music, Mahalia Jackson made her 1950 debut at Carnegie Hall. The vocalist also worked closely with Martin Luther King, Jr. for civil rights. She poses in a black lace mantilla, with a mournful expression.
