James Garfield in Uniform
Brigadier General James A. Garfield was an officer of the Federal Army during the Civil War. He was promoted to the rank of major general, but resigned his commission in 1863 to enter the U.S. House of Representatives, to which he had been elected in 1862. He would later be elected the twentieth president of the United States, although he was assassinated during his first year in office.
