General Ulysses S. Grant (1822-1885)
Here is a young General Ulysses S. Grant in 1862, while he was in command of troops in the District of Western Tennessee and Northern Mississippi. Grant would later become Lieutenant General and lead the Union to victory over the Confederates. He would also twice be elected president during which time the Fifteenth Amendment, banning racial discrimination in voting rights, was enacted and ratified. Grant also signed a civil rights act and three laws to enforce the Fourteenth and Fifteenth amendments.
