General Ulysses S. Grant and Secretary of War Edwin Stanton stand beside a cannon labeled "Congress" as they face Lorenzo Thomas and President Andrew Johnson who holds a document labeled "coup d'etat." Johnson attempted to fire Stanton and replace him with Thomas and then Grant because Stanton disagreed with his Reconstruction policies. As a result Johnson was impeached by Congress for violation of the Tenure of Office Act. This cartoon originally appeared in the March 7, 1868 issue of Harper's Weekly.
