"Would You Marry Your Daughter To A Nigger?"

This cartoon by Thomas Nast from the July 1, 1868 issue of Harper's Weekly asks the question: "Would You Marry Your Daughter To A Nigger?" Salmon P. Chase, a leading Democratic candidate for president in 1868, former abolitionist, and a supporter of civil rights for African-Americans, is depicted as a preacher at the wedding of an African-American man and a white woman who represents the Democratic Party. The wedding, which is held at Tammany Hall, has various Democratic leaders present. The cartoon shows the Democrats as an overtly racist party and ultimately the answer to the question was "No," as Chase was not nominated for the presidency by the party.
