"Dignity and Impudence"
This cartoon by Thomas Nast originally appeared in the October 24, 1868 issue of Harper's Weekly. It depicts Republican presidential candidate Ulysses S. Grant as the nation's guard dog with a collar labeled "Peace," while Francis Blair, the Democratic vice presidential candidate, is depicted as a small toy dog with a "war" collar.
