"Wilkes Booth the Second"

This illustration by Thomas Nast appeared on the front page of the November 7, 1868 issue of Harper's Weekly, just days before the presidential election of 1868. It accompanied a story, "The Policy of Assassination," which reported that Democratic vice presidential nominee Frank Blair predicted that, if elected, Republican presidential nominee General Ulysses S. Grant would establish a military dictatorship. It lampoons Blair's call for Grant's assassination in such a case.
