"At His Post"

This cartoon from "Harper's Weekly," July 3, 1886 shows President Grover Cleveland standing in the doorway of a large safe, which has the words "U.S. Treasury" written above it. Many papers with the words "Private Pension" are strewn on the floor. The words underneath the title read "President Cleveland: 'I am so thoroughly tired of disapproving gifts of public money to individuals who in my view have no right or claim to the same, notwithstanding apparent Congressional sanction.' "
