President Garfield in his Sickbed in New Jersey
When James Garfield was sufficiently recovered from his gunshot wounds of July 2, he was moved by train to a cottage on the ocean at Elberon, New Jersey. In this "Harper's Weekly" cover illustration from September 24, 1881, Garfield looks out of the window at the ocean. But it was very soon after this scene that he took a turn for the worse, and he died on September 19, 1881.
