Lincoln's Coffin
In 1876, Abraham Lincoln's body was almost stolen and held for a ransom of 200,000 dollars. Law officers swooped down on the would-be grave robbers just in time, but afterwards the monument officials were so nervous that something of the kind would happen again that they hid Lincoln's coffin deep in the foundations of the monument. This is a newspaper picture of the coffin in its hiding place.
