Execution of the Lincoln Conspirators

These are the gallows at the Old Arsenal Prison. Moments before the hanging, the four condemned--Mary Surratt, Lewis Powell, David Herold, and George Atzerodt--are seated in chairs on the scaffold. Umbrellas have been raised against the blinding sun and 100 degree heat.
