Roger Taney (1777-1864)
Roger Brooke Taney, the fifth Supreme Court Justice, wrote the infamous Dred Scott decision, holding that slaves (and even free descendants of slaves) were not citizens and might not sue in the federal courts. Further, Congress could not forbid slavery in any territories of the United States.
